Warum Fantasy Fotografie immer beliebter wird

The growth of Fantasy Photography

If you are into Fantasy Photography, you’ve most likely heard of Bella Kotak , Lillian Liu and Agnieszka Lorek  to name just a few of the giants in the scene. Fantasy in art goes back centuries, but in recent years seems to have gained momentum in the field of photography. So how did a somewhat obscure branch of digital art grow into what is becoming it’s own widespread genre? I’ve put together a few things I think may have contributed. As well as some possible explanations from well-established fantasy photographers themselves.

Wenn Du Fantasy Fotografie magst, hast Du höchstwahrscheinlich schonmal von Bella Kotak , Lillian Liu und Agnieszka Lorek  gehört, um nur ein paar Giganten der Szene zu nennen. Fantasy in der Kunst geht Jahrhunderte zurück. Aber in den letzten Jahren scheint sie im Bereich der Fotografie an Dynamik gewonnen zu haben. Wie ist also ein etwas obskurer Zweig der digitalen Kunst zu einem weit verbreiteten Genre herangewachsen? Ich habe ein paar Dinge zusammengestellt, die ich dazu beigetragen habe. Und außerdem ein paar mögliche Erklärungen von gut etablierten Fantasy-Fotografen selbst.

Creating your own wonderland

I first became aware of fairytale and fantasy as its own genre of photography when I discovered Kirsty Mitchell’s ‘Wonderland,’ series shortly followed by Bella Kotak’s floral world. Having taken film photography at high school and trained as a Graphic Designer, I’d never considered before that I could create other worlds with a camera. The idea of creating another dimension, filled with whatever characters I could dream up was an incredible concept.

Ich bin das erste Mal auf Märchen und Fantasy als eigenes Fotografie-Genre aufmerksam geworden, als ich Kirsty Mitchells „Wonderland“  Serie und kurz darauf Bella Kotaks Blütenwelt entdeckt habe. Ich habe Film und Fotografie in der High School belegt und eine Ausbildung zum Grafikdesigner absolviert. Doch währenddessen habe ich nie in Betracht gezogen, dass ich mit einer Kamera andere Welten erschaffen könnte. Die Vorstellung, eine andere Dimension zu erschaffen, gefüllt mit allen Wesen, die ich mir nur vorstellen konnte, war ein unglaubliches Konzept.

Sharing & encouragement

Inspired and motivated by the work I saw, I began to teach myself using trial and error. As well as the wealth of educational web content that is available. So many fantasy photographers have shared their processes and methods online. There is a kindness in the scene. It’s almost as though the photographers take on the climate of the worlds they create. Take Bella Kotak, who shares her work and knowledge via social channels with messages of encouragement; that you too can make something extraordinary using a second-hand dress and a bush on the side of the road. Of course it isn’t that simple. But ‘everyone starts somewhere’ is a message that is prolific in the scene and excludes no one from trying.

Teilen & ermutigen

Inspiriert und motiviert von den Arbeiten, die ich sah, begann ich mich selbst zu unterrichten. Anhand von Versuch und Irrtum sowie der Fülle an verfügbaren Netzinhalten. So viele Fantasy-Fotografen haben ihre Entwicklungen und Methoden online geteilt. Die Szene ist wirklich freundlich. Es ist fast, als absorbierten die Fotografen das Klima der Welten, die sie erschaffen. Nimm zum Beispiel Bella Kotak, die ihre Arbeiten und ihr Wissen über Kanäle in en sozialen Medien zusammen mit Nachrichten der Ermutigung teilt; dass Du auch etwas Außergewöhnliches mit einem Second-Hand-Kleid und einem Busch neben der Straße erschaffen kannst. Natürlich ist es nicht so einfach. Aber ‘jeder fängt irgendwo an‘ ist eine Botschaft, die in der Szene häufig vorkommt und niemanden vom Ausprobieren ausschließt.

The universal pastime

This is possibly how it began for many other photographers. But what I find interesting, is that people are drawn to the elements of fantasy specifically. Its wonder, beauty and alternative reality seems to appeal to so many. Fantasy in itself is a universal pastime. We grow up on Tolkien, Disney and The Brothers Grimm (at least I did) and graduate to Science-Fiction and Romance films, which are about as realistic. Fantasy in the entertainment field is huge and photography is an accessible way for many people to try their hand at creating it.

Der universelle Zeitvertreib

So hat es wahrscheinlich für viele andere Fotografen angefangen. Was ich aber interessant finde ist, dass die Leute sich speziell zu den Fantasy-Elementen hingezogen fühlen. Ihr Zauber, ihre Schönheit und alternative Realität scheinen so viele anzusprechen. Fantasy selbst ist ein universeller Zeitvertreib. Wir wachsen mit Tolien, Disney und den Gebrüdern Grimm auf (ich zumindest) und steigen auf zu Science Fiction und Liebesfilmen, die ungefähr genauso realistisch sind. Fantasy ist im Unterhaltungssektor ein gigantischer Bereich, und die Fotografie ist für viele Menschen eine leicht zugängliche Möglichkeit, sich selbst an ihrer Erschaffung zu versuchen.

The power of imagination

There seems to be something in humanity that is always looking for more, or new or special. The idea that we can create reality as we want to see it is captivating. If you want to go deep, fantasy offers us a supernatural element. Our characters are limitless (at least as limitless as our skills in portraying them) and we can imagine that there are other realms than the one we experience day to day.

Die Macht der Vorstellungskraft

Es scheint etwas in der Menschheit zu geben, das immer nach mehr, etwas Neuem oder Besonderem sucht. Die Idee, dass wir eine Realität so wie wir sie sehen wollen erschaffen können ist fesselnd. Wenn Du tief eintauchen willst, bietet Fantasy uns ein übernatürliches Element. Unsere Wesen sind grenzenlos (zumindest so grenzenlos wie unsere Fähigkeiten, sie darzustellen), und wir können uns vorstellen, dass es andere Reiche gibt als das, was wir täglich erleben.

How would you summarise the growing popularity of the fantasy genre?

I asked Bella, Lillian and of course Rekii, how they would summarise the growing popularity of the genre and this is what they had to say:

“I think this community has always existed and I think it’s through platforms such as Instagram and Facebook that we’re now seeing more work from incredible artists. It shares beauty and a sense of wonder. I like to think of it as an invitation for the viewer to escape from their world for a moment and get lost in the artist’s.” – Bella Kotak

“People have always tried to seek understanding through self-exploration in daydreams, storytelling and escapism.” – Lillian Liu

“I think Fantasy Photography is gaining so much importance because people always want a short break from everyday life. In the world of fantasy, time seems to stand still for a moment, all your worries are far away and you can be who or whatever you want to be.” – Rekii
